Deakin University PR student and recent Circus Media intern, Jacqui Thebes, has embarked on an international internship to Indonesia and she shares with us her experience so far.

“I have been here for just over a week now, and each day so far has been jam-packed with fun activities and cultural immersion.

I arrived in Yogyakarta on the 14th of January. During this past week in Yogya, the group of Australian interns and our Indonesian buddies have visited Sultan’s Palace and the Taman Sari Water Garden, the Borobudur Temple, IWAYO (Yogyakarta Transgender Community), and Mt Merapi.

The absolute stand out for me though was having dinner in the village of Kampung. Here, we were welcomed by young Indonesian girls dancing in traditional dress, before having dinner at various homes in the village. We sang, danced, and had a feast with the locals. This was very humbling and such a beautiful experience.

I am now at staying at BINUS Square in Jakarta, where I will be for the next 3 weeks for my internship! I begin this afternoon.

I’m interning at a company called Burgreens who make healthy, organic, vegan fast food. They’ve only been around for four years but already have four stores. They promote sustainable living and eco-friendly practices. They also support and employ underprivileged women.

I am working in their office doing some PR and marketing, specifically, at the moment, I’m working on their Live Greener campaign.

On another note – I have also learnt some Indonesian! We did three language classes and our teacher was so lovely.

Selamat tinggal!”
