Circus Media formed a partnership with Deakin University to offer a formal internship program for students studying PR, communications, marketing and design, with a placement available every two months throughout the year exclusively for Deakin students.

Interns will predominately be working with Geelong Community Foundation, of which our owner Carly is on the Board of Directors.

We are excited to have our first successful applicant, Lucy Marra, officially begin her internship as part of this program.

Hear a little about Lucy and her first day at the Circus.

Tell us a little about yourself Lucy?

My name is Lucy Marra, I grew up in a small farming town called Nhill, which is about four hours drive from Geelong. I am in my second year of a Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University, majoring in Public Relations, Visual Communication Design and Marketing.

I am also a recipient of the Deakin University Vice-Chancellors Academic Excellence Scholarship; which is awarded on academic achievements, volunteering and community work. The scholarship includes involvement in the Vice-Chancellors professional excellence program which involves personal and professional challenges each year. It also includes the opportunity to attend a dinner with the Vice-Chancellor, other scholarship recipients and also representatives from businesses in Victoria at the end of each year.

I like to spend my free time either with family, reading books, making DIY face washers, drawing and going on road trips with my partner.

Where did you hear about Circus Media (CM) and how did you apply?

I first found about Circus Media when I was researching communication businesses in Geelong. As soon as I saw their website and read a little about them I just knew I wanted to do an internship with them as they cover all my interests and areas of study. It also looked like a positive and vibrant agency to be a part of.

I applied online through the internship program that CM and Deakin University have partnered on. I answered question such as; what I hope to gain from my internship, any experience I have in the PR or Marketing sector, which of CM’s campaigns I find interesting and what skills are needed to work in the PR industry. I was incredibly lucky to be accepted for an internship and am looking forward to the next few months.

How has your first day been at Circus Media?

My first day has been fantastic, the girls here are so welcoming and lovely people in general, they have made me feel so comfortable. CM is great in that they give you interesting projects to work on straight away and really want you to experience working in the industry and not just observing. Today I have been helping collect media coverage and upload it to respective social media platforms, as well as doing some research for clients.

What are you wanting to learn at Circus Media?

At CM I am hoping to gain experience and skills in a professional setting which I wouldn’t be able to get in my study. I am excited to be given a chance to learn how to work and communicate with clients as well as how to design content which engages audiences.

Why did you chose Circus Media?

The degree that I have chosen to do covers a wide range of areas as I know that how the communications industry is progressing and growing; having an understanding of a wide range of skills as well as having an understanding of overall business operations is really important and becoming higher demand for graduates. As such, CM is the perfect place to do an internship for me as they’re a one-stop-shop that offers a wide range of services including PR, Traditional and Digital Marketing to Graphic Design and Content Creation. As an intern this means I get to experience all these areas and learn from a business that is a leader in its field. They are responding to requests and have evolved into a business which can cater to all aspects of a clients communication needs.
