Bec Connolly is a Geelong-based skin and beauty therapist with over 12 years’ experience and is the owner of boutique home beauty salon; Luxe on Chester. Bec provides professional advice and treatments to all the clients who walk through her door.
Thanks for featuring on this week’s Ladies We Love Bec! Could you please tell us a bit about your background and your business?
Thanks so much for having me! I started my traineeship straight after high school at a day spa in Lorne, I then worked in the spa industry until I decided to take a leap and go out on my own. I always knew I wanted to make people feel good about themselves, skin and beauty was the perfect fit for me.
You’ve worked in the industry for over a decade. When did you start your own business and what inspired this?
I started Luxe on Chester in 2015 – a few months after my first son Ollie was born. My husband and I decided it was time for us to focus on our family and it was really important for me to be able to stay home with my baby. Starting Luxe meant that I could still work in the field that I adore and also be at home, the best of both worlds for us.
On your Facebook page, you describe your business as a proud stockist of Skin Juice skincare. Could you please tell us a bit about some of your much-loved products and some of the benefits of them?
Skin Juice is an Australian nutraceutical product. It is a professional brand, stocked and recommended by qualified skin and beauty therapists. Skin Juice has a ‘nature gone active’ approach, meaning it is all natural but still really active on the skin. I chose Skin Juice as it is Australian, natural, beautifully packaged, affordable and… it works!
Some of your specialties include waxing and fake tan. What’s the secret to a natural-looking, streak-free tan?
Prep-prep-prep. Every client who books in for a tan with me is sent a list of ‘Tan Tips’. This includes exactly how to prep the skin to ensure their tan is even and perfect for their event.
As a beauty therapy professional, you must both love and hate some of the current beauty trends! If you had to choose one trend you love and one you hate, what would they be?
I LOVE fruit peels! They are amazing to give the skin a fresh glow leading up to an event, great for resurfacing the skin and giving the client a good, deep clean. One thing I am not a fan of is the pencil thin eyebrow trend which was all the go about 8 years ago – once you over pluck/wax they tend not to grow back!
What are some of your favourite treatments to get done yourself?
Anything! Haha. Being a mum of two young boys, any chance for a little bit of ‘me time’ is amazing and so important.
You have some beautiful pictures on your Instagram of your husband and children. Do they enjoy trying out your skin care products?
Thank you! My husband is the most supportive person I know, I am very lucky. He gets roped in to trying so many different treatments and products! My boys are constantly smothered in my Green Juice Balm, great for dryness/eczema/rashes/cradle cap etc.
What’s the best thing about being a beauty therapist, and what’s the most challenging?
The best thing by far is making people feel good and improving people’s self-worth – it is a very rewarding career. The most challenging is educating people about at home beauty trends that can go horribly wrong.
What is your absolute go-to food you couldn’t live without?
Pizza! So many fab pizzerias in Geelong – dangerous!
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
My husband and I went to New Zealand for our honeymoon, we had a ball and can’t wait to go back with the kids.
What’s something you enjoy doing in your spare time? Any passions or hobbies outside beauty therapy?
Family time – exploring and adventuring with my boys. I also am passionate about supporting other local and small Geelong businesses.
Lastly, do you have any advice for budding beauty therapists wanting to get into the industry, or for someone starting up their own business in beauty and skincare?
Just go for it – it is a fantastic career, so many different specialties and can be wonderful for family life.
